In the quiet community of Maquoketa, Iowa, the life of Michael A. Berg, a 60-year-old Caucasian male, was brought to a sudden and violent end on November 2, 2022. On that Wednesday evening, at approximately 5:35 p.m., law enforcement responded to a report of a shooting in the rural area of Fulton, just north of Maquoketa. Upon their arrival, they discovered Michael Berg suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was immediately transported to the Jackson County Regional Health Center, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead.
The initial stages of the investigation saw the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation assisting local deputies. Two individuals who were present at the scene were interviewed by authorities and were reported to be cooperative. In the immediate aftermath, no arrests were made, and officials assured the community that there were no ongoing safety concerns. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Berg's death continued, with physical evidence being collected from the scene. The case was then set to be reviewed by the Jackson County Attorney's Office.
As the investigation progressed, authorities arrested 37-year-old Brian Manning of rural Maquoketa. Manning was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Michael Berg's death. In May 2023, he entered a plea of not guilty. The case proceeded to trial in March 2024, where the prosecution argued that Manning had "willfully and deliberately" shot Berg. The defense, however, painted a different picture, contending that Manning's actions were in defense of his father, Bruce Manning, who they claimed was being attacked by an intoxicated Berg. Bruce Manning testified during the trial that he had feared for his life during the altercation that preceded the fatal gunshot.
Following the trial, the jury deliberated and returned a guilty verdict, convicting Brian Manning of second-degree murder. In May 2024, he was sentenced to a term of 50 years in prison for the death of Michael Berg. In a subsequent legal move, Manning appealed his conviction, but the appeal was ultimately denied by a higher court, which found no evidence to support his claims and affirmed the original murder conviction. Brian Manning will be required to serve a significant portion of his sentence before being eligible for release.
