In the pre-dawn hours of September 1, 2013, a sense of duty led 32-year-old Caucasian male, Sergeant Derek Ray Johnson, to a strangely parked vehicle on a quiet street in Draper, Utah. What began as a routine check on a seemingly disabled car would, in moments, escalate into a tragedy that would stun the community. As he approached the vehicle, before he could even exit his patrol car, he was met with a sudden and violent burst of gunfire. Despite being mortally wounded, Sgt.
Johnson was able to radio for help, a final act of a dedicated officer. He was rushed to Intermountain Medical Center, but his injuries were too severe, and he succumbed to them, leaving behind a wife and son.
The ensuing investigation quickly locked down the suburban neighborhood as law enforcement swarmed the area in search of those responsible. The focus of the investigation fell upon the two occupants of the vehicle Sgt. Johnson had approached: Timothy Troy Walker and his girlfriend, Traci Vaillancourt. It was discovered that after shooting Sgt. Johnson, Walker had turned the gun on Vaillancourt, shooting her in the back, before attempting to take his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both Walker and Vaillancourt were found critically injured and transported to the hospital. Investigators would later reveal that Walker, a man with a criminal record, and Vaillancourt were living out of their car at the time of the incident.
In the wake of the senseless violence, the legal process began. Timothy Troy Walker was charged with aggravated murder for the death of Sgt. Johnson, as well as the attempted murder of Traci Vaillancourt and several firearms offenses. To avoid a potential death sentence, Walker ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Traci Vaillancourt faced charges of obstructing justice for her role in the events leading up to the shooting. She eventually reached a plea deal and was sentenced to probation and a drug treatment program. The tragic death of Sgt. Derek Ray Johnson, a respected officer and family man, left a lasting scar on the community he served and served as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those in law enforcement.
