Authorities were led to the residence after a local newspaper received a troubling handwritten letter.
Inside the home, they discovered both Mary and her 82-year-old husband, Dell Andrew Johnson. The investigation concluded that Johnson had fatally shot his wife before taking his own life in a murder-suicide. This violent end stood in stark contrast to the life Mary had led, one dedicated to combating such violence. Friends and family were left in shock, as there were reportedly few, if any, outward signs of domestic distress. Her son described their relationship as a good one, with Johnson having been her caregiver as she faced the challenges of Parkinson's disease.
Mary Flynn Palley was a graduate of UCLA and its School of Law. After moving to Utah, she continued her legal career, offering countless hours of pro bono work to help survivors of domestic and sexual abuse obtain protective orders. For 26 years, she was a dedicated board member of the nonprofit organization Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse. Her commitment extended to helping develop and fund transitional housing for survivors.
The letter that triggered the police welfare check also contained a copy of a check and mentioned Mary's increasing frustration with her Parkinson's disease, suggesting it may have been a contributing factor in the tragic events.
