On the evening of December 9, 2016, 61-year-old Kevin Nelson, a male resident of Ogden, Utah, was tragically killed during a violent home invasion. The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 PM at a residence located at 3636 Ogden Avenue in South Ogden, where Nelson was visiting his neighbor, 24-year-old Cyle Van Komen.

According to investigators, the attack was not a random act. Surveillance footage captured three masked individuals staking out the house before the home invasion. The suspects were seen peering into windows and observing the home for a significant period before two of them entered through the back door while a third remained outside. Upon entering, one of the intruders opened fire, fatally shooting both Kevin Nelson and Cyle Van Komen. A third individual, a 20-year-old roommate of Van Komen's, was also shot and critically injured in the backyard but survived.

The South Ogden Police Department, with assistance from the Weber County Attorney's Office and later the Weber Metro Cold Case Task Force, launched an investigation into the double homicide. The released surveillance footage showed the three suspects wearing masks, with one appearing to wear a paintball mask, making their identification difficult. Despite public appeals for information and the belief that the suspects were familiar with the house and its residents, no arrests have been made in the case. The identities of the three assailants remain unknown, and the case is still considered an unsolved cold case. Police have indicated that while there was evidence of marijuana and alcohol use at the residence, they do not believe the crime was gang-related and have urged anyone with information, regardless of other circumstances, to come forward to bring closure to the families of the victims.
