In the early morning hours of October 28, 2018, the life of 30-year-old Hispanic male Edgar Luna Najera, known to many in his Moab, Utah community as "Rojo," was tragically cut short. Inside his mobile home on Walnut Lane, a gathering of people became the scene of a violent altercation. An argument escalated, leading to Najera being shot multiple times. Moab City Police responded to a call about a fight in progress around 1:30 a.m.
and discovered Najera deceased at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.
Witnesses at the residence described a chilling sequence of events. An argument over drugs reportedly grew heated, with a man identified as Omar Guerro, also known as Martin Armento Verduzco Lopez or Irving Martin Armento, becoming angry and frustrated with Najera. Guerro, who was in possession of a. 40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun, allegedly shot Najera once in the torso. After demanding information about Najera's family, he then fired a second, fatal shot to his forehead. Immediately following the shooting, Guerro and several others fled the scene in a black SUV, which was later found abandoned by police.
The investigation quickly identified Omar Guerro as the primary suspect. Just two days after the shooting, he was charged with murder. A manhunt ensued, and on November 1, 2018, Guerro was apprehended in northern Arizona after a 100-mile police chase involving the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Two other men, Jaime Flores Solis and Jorge Hernandez, were also arrested and accused of assisting Guerro in his attempt to flee after the homicide.
Omar Guerro was extradited back to Utah to face charges. On May 31, 2019, a jury found him guilty of murder, aggravated kidnapping, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person. He was subsequently sentenced to at least 32 years in prison and ordered to pay restitution. While awaiting sentencing, Guerro was also charged with aggravated assault for an attack on another inmate.
