Veronica Lopez, a 15-year-old female from Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot on May 28, 2016, during the Memorial Day weekend. She was riding in a sport-utility vehicle on DuSable Lake Shore Drive when another vehicle pulled up alongside and opened fire. Several bullets struck Lopez through the passenger side, while the driver of the SUV was also shot twice but managed to drive to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lincoln Park.
