On a tragic day in early June of 2020, the life of 10-year-old Ezra Jude Osborn, a White/Caucasian male, was cut short in what was later determined to be a murder-suicide. The devastating event unfolded in a home in the Daybreak neighborhood of South Jordan, Utah. Ezra, along with his younger 8-year-old brother Seth, was fatally shot by their 41-year-old father, Brian Thomas Osborn, who then took his own life.
The boys' mother returned home from her work as an essential worker at a
children's hospital on the afternoon of June 2nd to a horrific scene. She discovered her younger son, Seth, critically injured from a gunshot wound in the living room. She rushed him to the hospital, but he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Upon a further search of the residence on Pentenwell Lane, authorities made a grim discovery in the basement: the bodies of Ezra and his father, Brian, both deceased from gunshot wounds.
Investigations revealed that Brian Osborn and the boys' mother had been divorced since October of the previous year. Despite the separation, he had been staying at the family home for about a month leading up to the incident to help with childcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. This arrangement was made to support the mother, and there was reportedly minimal interaction between the former spouses during this time. Authorities had previous, non-criminal domestic-related contact with the family, the last of which was in November 2019.
The suspect in the double homicide was identified as the boys' father, Brian Osborn, and with his death, the case was closed. There were no other suspects, and no arrests were made. An investigation into the father's motives uncovered journals that suggested potential mental health issues, though they did not contain specific threats of violence. The community was left to mourn the loss of two young brothers, remembered by friends and neighbors for their vibrant personalities. Ezra was described as an artistic and imaginative boy who loved to make others feel special.
