In the quiet town of Springville, Utah, a tragedy unfolded that would leave the community heartbroken. Lily Conroy, a 17-year-old Caucasian female, was a junior at Springville High School, known for her vibrant personality and love for softball. She and 19-year-old Masao Kaanga had grown up together on the same street and had been in a relationship. However, the night before May 18, 2022, the young couple decided to end their relationship.
In the wake of their breakup, Kaanga allegedly made undisclosed threats against Conroy.
The following day, concern for Lily's well-being prompted a request for a police welfare check. The search for the two teenagers led officers to Hobble Creek Park. There, they discovered a devastating scene inside Kaanga's vehicle. Both Lily and Masao were found slumped over in the front seats, each with a gunshot wound to the head. Kaanga was pronounced dead at the scene from what was determined to be a self-inflicted wound. Lily was mortally wounded but still alive and was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
Lily Conroy was placed on life support, but her injuries were too severe for her to survive. In an act of profound generosity, her family chose to keep her on life support for three days so that her organs could be donated, a final gift to help others in need. Lily was pronounced dead on May 21, 2022. The incident was investigated as an apparent murder-suicide, with Masao Kaanga as the sole suspect in Lily's death.
