In the spring of 2017, the life of Yasheeka Miles, a 33-year-old Black / African American woman, was tragically cut short. On the night of April 7th, neighbors at her New Britain, Connecticut apartment complex on North Mountain Road grew alarmed by the sounds of a violent struggle. They reported hearing a fight and what sounded like someone being thrown around, followed by an abrupt and chilling silence.
When police responded, they were met with an unresponsive and locked door to a second-floor apartment. Upon forcing entry, they discovered a grim scene. Yasheeka was found in a bedroom, lying face down in a pool of blood, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds to her head and shoulder. There were clear signs of a violent confrontation, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The immediate aftermath of the discovery of Yasheeka's body was filled with urgency and fear for her two-year-old daughter, who was missing from the apartment. This led to the issuance of an Amber Alert as law enforcement began a desperate search for the child. The focus of the investigation quickly turned to Yasheeka's estranged husband, Patrick Miles. The couple's relationship was known to be volatile, with a history of domestic disputes. Fortunately, the young girl was found safe and unharmed with relatives in New York City early the next morning. A few days later, Patrick Miles was located and apprehended in West Springfield, Massachusetts, becoming the primary suspect in his wife's murder.
The legal proceedings that followed have been a long and arduous journey for Yasheeka's loved ones. In 2019, Patrick Miles was convicted of murdering his wife and sentenced to 55 years in prison. Prosecutors portrayed him as a jealous and enraged husband. However, this conviction was not the final chapter. In 2022, the Connecticut Supreme Court overturned the conviction, citing that the prosecutor had improperly commented on his decision to remain silent after being arrested. This ruling necessitated a new trial. In October 2025, a second trial commenced, but after days of deliberation, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict, resulting in the judge declaring a mistrial. This has left the quest for justice for Yasheeka Miles in a state of uncertainty, with the potential for a third trial looming.
