On a cold December morning in 2020, the life of 43-year-old Darlene S. Brown, a Black/African American female from Hamden, Connecticut, was tragically cut short. On December 16th, police responded to the area of Pine Rock Avenue and Arch Street to find Ms. Brown in the driver's seat of her vehicle, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Nearby, her husband, 57-year-old Derrick Miller, was discovered on the ground with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
The investigation into the violent incident, which authorities described as domestic in nature, quickly focused on Miller. He and Ms. Brown had only recently been married. After being released from the hospital on December 29, 2020, Miller was promptly arrested by Hamden Police. He was initially charged with criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, and illegal alteration of a firearm. A bond was set at $500,000.
As the investigation continued, more serious charges followed. On January 21, 2021, Derrick Miller was charged with the murder of his wife, Darlene Brown. He was arrested at Meriden Superior Court where his bond was increased to a court-ordered $2 million. An arrest warrant affidavit later revealed that Miller had allegedly sent text messages threatening to shoot his wife the day before the incident. According to the affidavit, after the shooting, Miller claimed to detectives that he and Brown had been arguing and that she had shot him first, causing him to grab the gun and 'go crazy.' However, DNA evidence from the handgun indicated Miller's contact with the weapon.
