The Asian American motel owner was shot and killed on June 27, 2021, following a heated argument with a guest at the Motel 6 he operated on Hartford Turnpike. Chaudhry, who was engaged to be married, was remembered by his family as a peaceful and fun-loving man who was excited about his future.
The incident began when a woman staying at the motel with her boyfriend, Alvin Waugh, inquired about using the swimming pool. An argument ensued over the $10 fee for a pool pass, during which Chaudhry asked the couple to leave the premises. Waugh then allegedly retreated from the pool area, only to return with a handgun. The confrontation reignited, and Waugh is accused of shooting Chaudhry multiple times in front of other guests, including children. Emergency medical services attempted to save Chaudhry at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Alvin Waugh, a 31-year-old from Hartford, fled into a nearby wooded area. He was, however, contacted by police via his cellphone and eventually surrendered to the authorities. Waugh was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges, including murder, criminal use of a weapon, carrying a firearm without a permit, and tampering with physical evidence.
