In the small town of Mulberry, Arkansas, a routine traffic stop on September 1, 1927, escalated into a tragic event that claimed the life of Deputy Marshal James Jackson. While on duty, Deputy Marshal Jackson and his colleague, Marshal Henry Hamm, pulled over a truck occupied by a man and a woman. The stop was initiated after the truck had been involved in a collision with another car and failed to stop.
The situation quickly turned violent when the male driver of the truck opened fire.
Deputy Marshal Jackson was struck by the gunfire and died instantly at the scene. Marshal Hamm was also shot during the confrontation and succumbed to his injuries two months later. The male suspect, who was 35 years old at the time, was apprehended and subsequently jailed on two counts of murder for the deaths of both officers. The woman who was with him in the truck was also taken into custody and charged as an accessory to the crimes.
