John A. Phillips, 75, male, set out on official business on December 22, 1930, responding to gunfire reported ten miles north of Huntsville in Madison County, Arkansas. He arrived with a deputy to serve an arrest warrant on an 84-year-old man suspected of firing at another resident. As the deputy read the warrant inside the suspect’s home, the man reached beneath clothing on his bed, drew out a shotgun, and shot Phillips, killing him instantly.
