On a day meant for gathering with family, the day before Thanksgiving in 2016, a chain of events began that would end a life and lead to a significant investigation in Conway, Arkansas. Gary Phillips, a 53-year-old male, was brought to the emergency room of Conway Regional Medical Center on November 23rd, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The circumstances of his arrival at the hospital immediately
launched an investigation by the Conway Police Department, who were soon joined by the Faulkner County Sheriff's Office. Investigators quickly determined that the shooting had occurred within the city limits of Conway and located a vehicle believed to be the scene of the crime. Their investigation also led them to the Stacy Motel, where they executed a search warrant on one of the rooms, though no suspects were found at that location at the time.
Within about a week of Gary Phillips's death, the investigation yielded significant progress. Detectives were able to identify three individuals as suspects in the homicide. Johnny Reed was the first to be taken into custody after he turned himself in to authorities on November 29, 2016, having learned he was a person of interest in the case. Shortly thereafter, on December 2nd, police arrested Keenan Beacham. The third suspect, Vennessa Lyons, was arrested the following morning. All three were charged with capital murder for their alleged involvement in Phillips's death. In addition to the capital murder charge, Lyons also faced two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.
