In the summer of 2017, a weekend in Little Rock, Arkansas, was marked by violence that claimed the life of 55-year-old Evilio Castro Alvarez. Originally from Mexico, he had moved to the city two years prior to work in the construction business. His life came to an end on a late Saturday night in July at the Spanish Valley Apartments, a place he not only called home but also where he worked.
He was discovered on the ground outside of building 29.
His family described him as a grandfather and a friend who didn't have an enemy in the world. They were left to make arrangements to return his body to Mexico for burial. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, a sense of fear and uncertainty lingered, particularly within the local Hispanic community.
Law enforcement officials began their investigation into his death, which was one of two unrelated homicides that occurred in the city over the same weekend. Witnesses at the Spanish Valley Apartments reported seeing a Black man wearing a white shirt and long black shorts running from the area with a gun in his hand. Despite this description, no arrests were ever made in connection with the shooting death of Evilio Castro Alvarez. His case was one of several homicides that year in Little Rock that remained unresolved.
