On a late summer evening, the hum of traffic on Interstate 530 just south of Little Rock was pierced by the sound of gunfire. Inside one of the vehicles, 19-year-old DeVonta Trevion Miller was traveling as a passenger. As another car pulled alongside theirs near the Woodson Lateral Road exit, a series of shots were fired into the vehicle carrying the young man from Hensley, Arkansas.
The events of that evening, September 3, 2020, proved fatal for Miller, who was struck by the gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting, which occurred around 8 p.m., also resulted in injuries to three other teenagers who were in the same car. The incident prompted an investigation by the Arkansas State Police, which soon began to piece together the events that led to the deadly roadside encounter.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation led authorities to a suspect. On November 23, 2020, 20-year-old Anthony Madison was arrested and formally charged in connection with the interstate shooting. Madison was accused of firing the shots from the adjacent vehicle that killed DeVonta Miller and wounded the three other teens. He was subsequently charged for his alleged role in the fatal attack.
