In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 23, 2021, the quiet of Ross Creek Road, south of Waldron, Arkansas, was broken by the sound of gunshots. A concerned resident alerted the Scott County Sheriff's Department at 4:10 AM, leading deputies to a grim discovery. Inside a pick-up truck parked outside a home, they found the body of a young woman in the passenger seat.
She was later identified as 24-year-old Brehana Lee Duran of Booneville, a female who had just celebrated her birthday two days prior.
Arkansas State Police special agents were called in to investigate what they deemed an apparent homicide. While the specific cause and manner of death were not immediately released, pending an examination by the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory, the circumstances pointed towards a violent end to a young life. Duran was remembered as a person who loved being outdoors, laughing, and drawing, with a particular passion for music and spending time with her family and friends.
In the course of their investigation, law enforcement identified a person of interest. A man, whose name was not publicly released, was seen driving the truck where Duran’s body was later found. He had attempted to flee from Waldron police officers earlier in the day. This individual was taken into custody by the Arkansas State Police for questioning in connection with Brehana Lee Duran's death.
