On a late February evening in 2022, events were set in motion that would tragically end the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer. Deputies with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence in Maumelle, a community near North Little Rock, to conduct a welfare check. A woman had been reported as being held against her will and had failed to show up for work, causing concern among her colleagues.
Upon the deputies' arrival at the home on Corvallis Road, they were met with gunfire from inside. A standoff ensued, but it was soon discovered that the suspect had managed to slip away, leaving the house empty.
With a potentially armed and dangerous individual on the loose, the Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Arkansas Department of Corrections K-9 unit to help track the suspect. Sergeant Joshua Caudell, a 29-year-old K-9 handler with nine years of service, responded to the call. A husband and father to three children, Caudell was known for his dedication to his job and his love for his family. He and his canine partner began a search of the area.
The K-9 unit tracked a scent to a nearby modular home on Overstreet Road. As Sergeant Caudell and other officers approached, they noticed the underpinning of the trailer appeared to have been disturbed. While investigating the potential hiding spot, a shot was fired from underneath the trailer. Sergeant Caudell was struck by a single gunshot to the chest. He was quickly moved from the scene and transported to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The man who fired the fatal shot fled the scene, prompting a manhunt. The following day, authorities located and arrested the suspect, identified as Demark Lee Jordan. The woman who was the subject of the initial welfare check was later found safe. In the subsequent legal proceedings, the suspect was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to a hospital for mental health treatment. Sergeant Caudell was remembered by his colleagues and loved ones as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his community.
