In the quiet community of Mountain View, Arkansas, Shirley Gail Murphree Watters, a 77-year-old female, lived a life deeply rooted in her faith and family. Her days came to a tragic and violent end in April of 2022. On April 21st of that year, she and her 55-year-old son, James Cecil Watters, were discovered deceased in their home on Northcutt Road.
Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds, shattering the peace of their rural lives.
The discovery of their bodies was the beginning of a larger, horrifying revelation in the small Stone County community. Several hours after the Watters were found, the bodies of another local couple, William Clinton Trammell, 75, and his wife, Sharon Trammell, 72, were found in their nearby residence. They too had been shot and killed, sending a wave of shock and fear through the area as law enforcement began to piece together the events of a brutal killing spree.
The investigation, led by the Arkansas State Police in conjunction with the Stone County Sheriff's Department, quickly honed in on a person of interest. Donnie Lee Trammell, the 54-year-old son of William and Sharon Trammell and a neighbor to the Watters, was taken into custody the day after the bodies were found, initially on unrelated probation violations. As the investigation progressed, a grim picture emerged, and Trammell was subsequently charged with four counts of first-degree murder.
The charges alleged that Donnie Lee Trammell was responsible for the deaths of his own parents as well as Shirley and James Watters. In addition to the murder charges, he faced two counts of aggravated burglary and possession of a firearm by a certain person in commission of a felony. He was also charged as a habitual offender. With an arrest made and a suspect in custody, the community of Mountain View was left to grapple with the senseless loss of four of its residents at the hands of one of their own.
