On a late summer evening in 2022, the quiet waters of Greers Ferry Lake near Heber Springs, Arkansas, became the scene of a complex and lingering tragedy. Around 11 p.m. on the night of September 17, deputies from the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office received a report of a possible suicide aboard a boat. After searching the lake, they located the vessel shortly after midnight and discovered the body of 52-year-old Timothy Meredith, a White male.
He had died from an apparent gunshot wound.
Timothy’s wife, Jackie Meredith, was on the boat and in a state of “high distress, screaming and crying,” according to deputies. She was taken to a local hospital, where she told investigators that she had heard a gunshot, which was followed by her husband falling to the floor. She said she believed he had shot himself. At the scene, authorities found a Taurus .380 handgun under Timothy’s right hand. His body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy.
The investigation soon uncovered details that complicated the initial report. The medical examiner was unable to determine a definitive manner of death but noted that the gunshot wound was “atypical of a suicide.” In a later interview, Jackie Meredith told detectives she had been upset with her husband for arriving at their lake house a day later than she had expected. She said they had been boating with friends that day, and after she fell asleep, Timothy woke her and told her to gather her belongings. Jackie stated her back was to him when she heard the gunshot and felt him brush against her as he fell.
More than a year later, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Timothy’s death led to legal action against his wife. Authorities concluded that evidence at the scene had been tampered with, specifically that the gun had been moved. Jackie Meredith, who was serving as the Woodruff County Clerk, was charged in the case.
On December 12, 2023, Jackie Meredith pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of tampering with physical evidence. A judge sentenced her to 45 days in jail but suspended the sentence, ordering that she would not serve any time behind bars if she committed no criminal offenses for one year. As of December 2023, the manner of Timothy Meredith's death remains officially undetermined, and the case is unsolved.
