On September 28, 2022, a young man named Leighton Whitfield, aged 21, was fatally shot in what should have been a place of healing. He was visiting his fiancée, Jade Pye, who was a patient on the fourth floor of CHI St. Vincent North hospital in Sherwood, Arkansas. The unexpected and tragic turn of events unfolded when a man they both knew, 24-year-old Raymond Lovett, also known as “Ajay,” entered the hospital room.
According to Pye’s account to the police, Lovett’s presence
quickly escalated to a fatal confrontation. He reportedly questioned the couple about the duration of their relationship before suddenly opening fire on Whitfield. After the shooting, Lovett allegedly pointed the weapon at Pye until she was able to press an emergency button, at which point he fled the scene. The brazen attack in the middle of a hospital sent shockwaves through the community and left a family grappling with a sudden and violent loss.
Law enforcement was quick to respond, and their investigation led them to Lovett. He was located and apprehended at a gas station approximately 15 miles from the hospital. Lovett was subsequently charged with capital murder and aggravated assault. During his trial, he claimed that he felt threatened by Whitfield. However, a Pulaski County jury found Raymond Lovett guilty of capital murder. He was sentenced to life in prison, with an additional fifteen-year enhancement for the use of a firearm, bringing a measure of legal closure to a senseless act of violence.
