On December 5, 2007, 48-year-old Gary Eugene Scharf, a resident of Lincoln, Nebraska, tragically lost his life during a mass shooting at the Von Maur department store in Omaha's Westroads Mall. Gary, known for his charismatic and adventurous spirit, was in Omaha on a business trip and had stopped by the mall to do some Christmas shopping before his flight.
