In the summer of 1986, a heated argument over alcohol would shatter a family and horrify the small community of Cottonwood, Arizona. The life of five-year-old Seleste Stanley, a young Caucasian girl, was tragically cut short on June 19th of that year, a victim of unimaginable violence at the hands of her own father. The events of that fateful evening would unfold in a secluded area outside of town, forever marking the landscape with a story of domestic turmoil turned deadly.
The evening began with a dispute between 23-year-old Milo M. Stanley and his wife, Susan, over his drinking. In an attempt to continue the argument away from prying ears, Milo drove his wife, along with their daughter Seleste and their one-year-old son, to a remote location. There, the argument escalated with catastrophic consequences. In a fit of rage, Milo fatally shot Susan. He then turned the weapon on his young daughter, ending her life with a single gunshot. Their infant son was left physically unharmed, spared only because his father believed he was too young to be a witness.
After committing the heinous acts, Milo disposed of the bodies of his wife and daughter by the roadside. He then returned home with his infant son, putting him to bed as if nothing had occurred. In a calculated attempt to cover his tracks, he later contacted the police to report his wife and daughter as missing, sparking a widespread search. The facade, however, did not last long. Family members, deeply concerned, discovered incriminating evidence, including bloodstains, inside Milo's vehicle.
Faced with the mounting evidence against him, Milo's story crumbled. The day after he reported them missing, he confessed to the brutal murders of his wife and daughter. He was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The legal proceedings that followed resulted in a conviction. For the murder of his wife, Susan, he received a life sentence. For the murder of his daughter, Seleste, he was sentenced to death. Milo Stanley would spend the remainder of his life on death row until May 10, 2013, when he was found dead in his cell from an apparent suicide, closing the final chapter on a tragic and senseless crime.
