Fred Lorraine Fottler Jr. was a 45-year-old man who had been born in 1955 in Concord, New Hampshire, but by the autumn of 2000 his life was tied to the back roads and drug corridors of the American Southwest. In Arizona he became part of a large-scale marijuana smuggling operation run through a group of traffickers known to the courts as the Pembertons, a ring for whom veteran transporter Homer Ray Roseberry had already hauled multiple loads in his motorhome from Arizona toward the Midwest.
