In the late summer of 2010, a tragedy unfolded in the desert city of Lake Havasu, Arizona, forever altering the lives of several families. On August 29th, Ashleigh Marie Nyland, a 23-year-old woman, was killed in a violent outburst that claimed multiple lives. Ashleigh, who had previously attended schools in Washington state before moving to Arizona, was among the victims of a mass shooting.
The devastating event was orchestrated by Brian Diez, who went on a rampage, fatally shooting
five individuals before taking his own life. Alongside Ashleigh Marie Nyland, the other victims of this senseless act of violence were Broc Wade Kelson, 20; Deborah Rose Langstaff, 23; Primo John Verdone, 24; and Russell Alan Nyland, 42. The motive behind the horrific attack and the specific sequence of events that transpired left the community in shock and mourning.
Following the deadly assault, Diez fled the scene with two children, leading to a frantic search by law enforcement. The chase, however, came to a grim conclusion when authorities discovered that Diez had committed suicide. With the perpetrator deceased, there were no subsequent arrests in connection with the multiple homicides. The community was left to grapple with the immense loss and the sudden, violent departure of so many of its members.
