On a tragic day in Wellton, Arizona, Theresa Lorraine Sigurdson, a 61-year-old female, became a victim in a violent shooting spree. The events of June 2, 2011, unfolded as a result of a bitter divorce, leaving a trail of devastation that shook the community. The perpetrator was identified as her 73-year-old ex-husband, Carey Hal Dyess, with whom she had been embroiled in a contentious separation marked by allegations of domestic violence and disputes over property.
The rampage began in
the early morning hours, around 5 a.m., when Dyess first targeted Theresa's best friend, 52-year-old Linda Kay Clatone. Despite being shot multiple times, Clatone miraculously survived the attack. Dyess then continued his deadly path, ultimately taking the life of Theresa Lorraine Sigurdson. His violence did not end there; he also murdered her attorney, Jerrold Shelley, in his downtown Yuma law office.
In addition to Theresa and her attorney, Dyess also killed three elderly friends who had provided support to her during her difficult divorce. The other victims were identified as Henry Scott Finney, 76, and James P. Simpson, 75. After carrying out the multiple homicides, Dyess drove back toward Wellton, pulled his vehicle over, and took his own life. His body was discovered later that morning inside his vehicle. The tragic event left a sole survivor and a community to mourn the senseless loss of multiple lives, all stemming from a history of domestic turmoil.
