On December 23, 2024, at approximately 11 a.m., Officer Michael Horan, 43, of the Greensboro Police Department, was fatally shot while responding to a report of a man with a firearm inside a Food Lion supermarket on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro, North Carolina. Witnesses inside the store reported hearing multiple gunshots.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Tarell Isaac McMillian, fled the scene following the incident.
A high-speed chase ensued, during which McMillian was apprehended in Duplin County, approximately 150 miles southeast of Greensboro. He was taken into custody without incident.
McMillian has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Officer Horan's death. He is currently being held without bond. Additional charges related to the vehicle pursuit that led to his arrest are pending.
Officer Horan had been with the Greensboro Police Department since early 2018 and had a distinguished career, including 18 years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was recognized for his dedication and bravery, notably receiving a lifesaving award in 2019 for rescuing a father and son from rip currents.
The Greensboro community has been deeply affected by this tragedy, with tributes honoring Officer Horan's service and memory. A memorial fund has been established to support his family during this difficult time.
