On November 25, 2024, 30-year-old Lenier Dulani Clayton of Joliet, Illinois, was fatally shot in a road rage incident on Interstate 80 near New Lenox. The altercation occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes approaching the Interstate 355 exit. According to Illinois State Police, Clayton was driving home from work when he became involved in a confrontation with another driver, identified as 45-year-old Phillip E. Rogers of Chicago. The situation escalated when Rogers' vehicle collided with Clayton's, forcing it into the center median wall. Both drivers exited their vehicles, at which point Rogers allegedly drew a 9mm handgun and fired multiple shots at Clayton, striking him nine times, primarily in the back. Clayton was transported to Silver Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m.
Rogers fled the scene but was apprehended approximately a mile away by Illinois State Police investigators. He has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Prosecutors revealed that Rogers was prohibited from owning a firearm or operating a vehicle due to a prior felony conviction for fleeing and eluding law enforcement. Data retrieved from Rogers' vehicle indicated deliberate actions leading to the collision with Clayton's car. A witness reported observing the initial collision and hearing multiple gunshots as they continued driving. Rogers claimed that Clayton had threatened to shoot him; however, investigators found no evidence that Clayton was armed during the incident. Rogers is currently in custody awaiting trial, with a court appearance scheduled for December 12, 2024.
Clayton's family has expressed profound grief over the loss of their loved one. His mother, Lenora, described him as "the life of the party" and a "very good young man," emphasizing his generous spirit and the joy he brought to those around him. His sister, Mia, recounted their close relationship and the shock of losing him so suddenly, especially considering they had spent time together shortly before the tragedy. In the wake of his passing, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral expenses and to honor Clayton's memory. They plan to dedicate the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday to celebrating his life, despite the immense void left by his absence.
