On February 18, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Galena Park, Texas, resulting in the death of 19-year-old Sayuri Gill, along with two other teenage girls. The incident took place at a home in the 2000 block of 2nd Street around 10:30 p.m.
Sayuri Gill, who was six months pregnant at the time, was shot and killed by 38-year-old Humberto Valdez-Saldana, also known as Valentin.
Valdez-Saldana was in a relationship with Sayuri's mother and had been living with the family for about two years. At the time of the incident, Sayuri's mother was not present in the home.
The other victims in this tragic event were Sayuri's 13-year-old sister, Melany Torres, and their 14-year-old neighbor, Laisha Perez. After shooting the three teenagers, Valdez-Saldana sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl who was also present in the home. He then allowed her to leave, and she managed to escape with Sayuri's 1-year-old daughter.
According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the motive for the killings is believed to be related to jealousy. Investigators suspect that Valdez-Saldana had been drinking all day and became enraged after another man reportedly spoke to Sayuri's mother.
After committing these heinous acts, Valdez-Saldana turned the gun on himself, committing suicide before authorities arrived at the scene. When officers from the Galena Park Police Department reached the home, they discovered the bodies of the three victims and the suspect.
The community of Galena Park was left in shock and mourning following this tragic event. A makeshift memorial was set up outside the home, filled with candles, balloons, and teddy bears, displaying pictures of Sayuri Gill. Family members described Sayuri and her sister Melany as happy girls who were always smiling and had positive attitudes.
No arrests were made in connection with this case, as the perpetrator, Humberto Valdez-Saldana, died by suicide at the scene. The investigation was led by the Harris County Sheriff's Office, with Sheriff Ed Gonzalez providing updates to the public.
This devastating incident occurred just two days after another unrelated shooting in Galena Park, where a 17-year-old high school student was killed near the Alvin D. Baggett Community Center. These back-to-back tragedies have deeply affected the Galena Park community, leaving residents and families grappling with grief and shock.
