On April 28, 2023, in Cleveland, Texas, 31-year-old Julisa Molina Rivera was among five individuals fatally shot in a tragic incident. The events unfolded when a neighbor, Francisco Oropeza, was reportedly firing his AR-15 rifle in his yard late at night. Concerned about the noise disturbing their infant's sleep, Rivera's household approached Oropeza, requesting that he cease the gunfire. Oropeza allegedly refused, stating he could do as he pleased on his property.
Shortly thereafter, he entered Rivera's home and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of Rivera and four others: Sonia Argentina Guzman (25), Diana Velazquez Alvarado (21), Jose Jonathan Casarez (18), and Daniel Enrique Laso (9).
The victims, all originally from Honduras, were shot "execution-style," with gunshot wounds above the neck. Some of the women were found lying on top of surviving children, apparently attempting to shield them from the gunfire. The tragic event left the community in shock and prompted a massive manhunt for the suspect.
Following a four-day search, authorities apprehended Francisco Oropeza on May 2, 2023. He was found hiding under a pile of laundry in a closet at a residence near Conroe, Texas, approximately 17 miles from the crime scene. Oropeza, a 38-year-old Mexican national, had been deported multiple times between 2009 and 2016. He was charged with five counts of first-degree murder, with bond set at $7.5 million. Subsequently, a Texas grand jury indicted him on a capital murder charge. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty.
In addition to Oropeza's arrest, his partner, Divimara Nava, was taken into custody for allegedly assisting him in evading capture. She faces charges of hindering the apprehension of a known felon. Authorities have indicated that others may also face charges for aiding Oropeza during the manhunt.
