On October 1, 2023, 48-year-old Karly Navarrete Díaz was tragically killed in Houston, Texas. She had recently separated from her husband of approximately 30 years, 55-year-old Ever Navarrete, and was in the process of divorcing him. To ensure her safety, Karly had moved to a new residence, the location of which was kept secret from Ever. Despite these precautions, Ever allegedly tracked her down, possibly by placing a tracking device on her vehicle.
On the night of the incident, Ever reportedly confronted Karly at her new home. As she opened her garage, he allegedly fired multiple shots, with at least 14 shell casings found at the scene. Karly sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the shooting, Ever fled the scene in a 2002 white GMC Sierra pickup truck. He later contacted his children, reportedly confessing to the shooting and instructing them to call an ambulance. Law enforcement authorities issued a warrant for his arrest, charging him with murder.
Subsequent investigations led authorities to believe that Ever had fled to El Salvador. On October 17, 2023, he was detained by El Salvadorian authorities for resisting arrest. However, due to the absence of an international warrant, known as a Red Notice, there were concerns about the legality of his continued detention. The Harris County District Attorney's Office expedited the necessary documentation, and by October 31, 2023, the Red Notice was accepted. This development allowed El Salvadorian officials to legally hold Ever for an additional 60 days while extradition proceedings were initiated to return him to Harris County to face charges for Karly's murder.
Karly's tragic death underscores the dangers associated with domestic violence, particularly during periods of separation or divorce. Her family has been vocal about the need for awareness and support for victims of domestic violence, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and implementing safety measures during such critical times.
