On December 14, 2023, at approximately 3:52 a.m., Manor Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Walmart parking lot located at 11923 E US 290 Highway in Manor, Texas. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Luis Angel Frias-Hernandez, of Elgin, Texas, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Frias-Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:13 a.m.
An anonymous tip led investigators to interview a woman who revealed that her boyfriend, 25-year-old Juan Jose Acuna-Gaona of Manor, was involved in the shooting. According to her statement, Acuna-Gaona was dropping her off at her vehicle in the Walmart parking lot when a white truck, driven by Frias-Hernandez, parked erratically nearby. She recounted that Frias-Hernandez exited his vehicle holding what appeared to be a heavy black trash bag, re-entered his truck, and began driving erratically around the parking lot before stopping again. Feeling threatened, both she and Acuna-Gaona armed themselves. As Frias-Hernandez approached them on foot, Acuna-Gaona fired multiple shots, resulting in Frias-Hernandez's death.
Surveillance footage from Walmart corroborated the woman's account of the events. When contacted by police, Acuna-Gaona admitted to the shooting, claiming it was in self-defense. He was subsequently arrested without incident and charged with first-degree murder. Initially, his bond was set at $250,000 but was later reduced to $50,000. Acuna-Gaona's attorney stated that his client acted to protect himself and his girlfriend, expressing confidence that a thorough investigation would demonstrate the justification for the use of deadly force.
