On January 20, 2024, at approximately 1:40 a.m., Maria Ramirez, 59, was fatally shot while stopped at a red light at the intersection of West Gulf Bank Road and North Houston-Rosslyn Road in Houston, Texas. She was returning home from a night out with a 55-year-old female passenger. As they waited at the light, a shot was fired from a silver Ford F-150 pickup truck, striking Ramirez. Her passenger was unharmed.
Following the shooting, Ramirez's vehicle rolled through the intersection, over a curb, and into a parking lot, where it collided with a dumpster. Passing motorists stopped to assist and called 9-1-1, but Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, there was no known suspect or motive for the shooting. However, through diligent investigation, Houston Police Department (HPD) detectives identified 57-year-old Wydell Dupree Jones as the suspect. On January 30, officers from the HPD North Patrol Division Crime Suppression Unit arrested Jones without incident. He was charged with murder in the 488th State District Court and possession of a controlled substance in the 174th State District Court. Jones was found in possession of methamphetamines at the time of his arrest.
During court proceedings, it was revealed that Jones and Ramirez were strangers, and there was no apparent motive for the shooting. Jones claimed he believed he was being followed, but investigators found no evidence to support this claim. Prosecutors described the act as unprovoked, with no indications of road rage or prior acquaintance between Jones and Ramirez. Jones has a lengthy criminal history in California and had been residing in Harris County for six years, working as a truck driver.
The arrest brought some relief to Ramirez's family, though concerns were raised regarding the initial bond amount set for Jones. Ramirez's father, Ruben Salazar, expressed his grief and frustration, questioning the value placed on his daughter's life. He described Maria as a joyful person who loved dancing and was cherished by her family and community. The family hopes for justice and that measures will be implemented to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
