On April 18, 2024, 25-year-old Angel Hernandez was found fatally shot in the courtyard near the pool area of her apartment complex on Shaenfield Road in San Antonio, Texas. Earlier that evening, Hernandez had been visiting a friend's apartment but left after receiving a message to meet someone in the courtyard. Surveillance footage from the complex showed a blue Dodge Charger arriving at the back gate, where a man in a red hoodie exited the vehicle and jumped over the gate.
Shortly after, Hernandez was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head.
In the months following the incident, San Antonio police and Crime Stoppers sought public assistance to identify the suspect. On September 2, 2024, 23-year-old Reynoldo Orion Rios turned himself in to authorities. According to an arrest affidavit, Rios had been communicating with Hernandez on the night of the shooting and arranged to meet her because he owed her money. Rios confessed to shooting Hernandez, expressing fear that she might harm him or his family if he failed to repay the debt.
Hernandez's mother, Diane Ruiz, expressed a mixture of relief and grief following Rios's confession. She recalled her daughter as a loving, free-spirited person and emphasized the profound loss felt by the family. Ruiz also noted that Hernandez had known Rios from high school and had been seen socializing with him after the incident. While Ruiz does not currently offer forgiveness, she hopes for justice and cherishes the memories of her daughter.
Rios was charged with murder and, after his confession, was taken into custody. He was later released on bond, with the legal proceedings ongoing. The case has highlighted issues of gun violence and its impact on families, as well as the complexities of relationships and conflicts that can lead to tragic outcomes.
