On March 16, 2023, 20-year-old Omar Rincon was fatally shot near Van Buren Elementary School in Stockton, California. The incident also resulted in the death of 17-year-old Justin Schenk and injuries to a 19-year-old individual.
Prior to his death, Rincon had multiple encounters with law enforcement. In January 2021, at the age of 22, he was arrested in San Joaquin County for several firearm-related offenses, including possession of a firearm and controlled substances, being an addict
in possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm in public, and possessing a firearm while on probation.
In the months leading up to his death, Rincon faced additional legal issues. In March 2022, he was arrested for resisting or obstructing a peace officer and public intoxication. Later, in September 2022, he was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime. In March 2023, shortly before his death, he was arrested for vandalism causing damage of $5,000 or more.
The area surrounding Van Buren Elementary School has experienced a series of violent incidents. In March 2023, the same month as Rincon's death, two individuals in their twenties were killed near Southside Market on Airport Way. Additionally, in May 2023, a fatal shooting occurred during a sideshow near Nena's on B Street. In September 2023, a 40-year-old man was found shot in a vehicle near Ninth and Anne Streets.
As of now, there have been no public reports of arrests or identification of suspects in connection with the shooting that resulted in the deaths of Omar Rincon and Justin Schenk. The Stockton Police Department has not released information regarding potential suspects or motives, leaving the case unsolved.
