On September 13, 2023, in unincorporated San Leandro, California, 54-year-old Carlos Smith was arrested following the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, identified as Gina Minerva Love. The incident occurred at Smith's residence near the intersection of 166th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard.
Earlier that morning, around 9:30 a.m., deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at the specified location.
Upon arrival, they confirmed that both Smith and Love were inside the home. As deputies established a perimeter and attempted to make contact, they heard a single gunshot from within the residence approximately 15 minutes later. Smith then exited the house and surrendered to authorities. Inside, deputies discovered Love deceased from a gunshot wound to the head.
