On December 8, 2023, James Johnson, a 59-year-old security guard, was fatally shot while on duty at a 7-Eleven store located at 2350 Harrison Street in Oakland, California. The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. when Johnson confronted an individual attempting to steal merchandise. The suspect brandished a firearm, shooting Johnson before fleeing the scene in a red four-door sedan. Despite prompt arrival by first responders, Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
