On February 4, 2024, at approximately 6:45 p.m., 20-year-old Jack Canchola and his cousin, 26-year-old Andres "Chavita" Garcia, both from Soledad, California, were fatally shot near the Salinas River in the 41000 block of Los Coches Road. The cousins had been spending time by the river when they were confronted by at least two individuals in a light-colored, four-door sedan. In an attempt to evade the assailants, Canchola and Garcia fled in their pickup truck while contacting emergency services, reporting that they were being chased by "guys with guns." Tragically, their vehicle veered off the road into a vineyard, where the pursuers caught up and executed them beside their truck.
Investigators from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office determined that the vehicle used by the suspects, a silver 2013 Kia Optima, had been reported stolen from the Monterey Peninsula four days prior to the incident. The investigation revealed that the attack was a case of mistaken identity; neither Canchola nor Garcia had any criminal backgrounds or gang affiliations. Their deaths were described as "execution-style" killings, underscoring the brutality of the crime.
In the months following the murders, a collaborative effort among local, regional, state, and federal law enforcement agencies led to significant developments in the case. On May 10, 2024, authorities announced the arrests of three suspects: 18-year-old Jonathan Leal Cervantes, 32-year-old Pedro Manuel Nava, and a juvenile, all from Greenfield. These individuals were charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of murder related to the deaths of Canchola and Garcia, as well as additional charges connected to other violent incidents in the region.
The apprehension of the suspects brought a measure of relief to the grieving families and the Soledad community, who had been deeply affected by the senseless loss of two respected and beloved young men. The arrests also highlighted the effectiveness of inter-agency cooperation in addressing violent crime and restoring a sense of security to the residents of South Monterey County.
