On May 11, 2024, 19-year-old Alexander Espino of Bloomington, California, was fatally shot while driving eastbound on the 10 Freeway in Covina. The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. near the Via Verde Street exit. Espino was operating a white Chevrolet Camaro with his cousin as a passenger when a motorcyclist, described as wearing black clothing and a black helmet, approached their vehicle.
Without any known provocation or prior altercation, the motorcyclist fired multiple shots into the passenger side of the Camaro, striking Espino in the chest.
Despite his injuries, Espino managed to steer the vehicle to the right shoulder and call 911. Emergency responders from the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived promptly, but Espino was pronounced dead at the scene. His cousin, who was unharmed, provided a statement to the authorities. The suspect fled the scene on a black Harley-Davidson-style motorcycle and remains unidentified.
