On the evening of July 14, 2024, Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a possible shooting in the 27000 block of Highway 36 near Bridgeville, California. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of 34-year-old Rafael Orlando Castillo-Cortes, a resident of Sacramento.
The investigation led to the arrest of 20-year-old Melvin Jeovany Portillo-Rodriguez, also from Sacramento, on charges of homicide. Authorities confirmed that Castillo-Cortes and Portillo-Rodriguez were acquainted prior to the incident. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
Following his arrest, Portillo-Rodriguez was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility without bail. The Sheriff's Office stated that there were no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the public. The case remains under investigation, and authorities have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
