Melvin James, a 14-year-old boy, was fatally shot on September 5, 2017, in the South Chicago neighborhood. The incident occurred a few blocks away from his home around 5 p.m. Melvin was shot in the leg and abdomen and was subsequently rushed to a nearby children’s hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 2 a.m. on September 6. His tragic death was yet another instance of youth lost to gun violence in a community that has been struggling with such incidents for years.
