On March 6, 2017, Kamari Belmont, aged 23, was shot and killed shortly after being released from Cook County Jail in Chicago. Belmont had faced murder charges for a 2015 shooting that resulted in the death of Sorrell Marshall. These charges were eventually dropped in January 2017 after prosecutors failed to provide a speedy trial. A friend posted a $100,000 bond for Belmont on an unrelated robbery case, and as Belmont was driven away from the jail, an SUV pulled alongside the car, and a gunman
opened fire, killing him at the scene. The suspects fled after crashing their vehicle.
