On July 18, 2017, 28-year-old Black male, Michael A. Peterman of Chicago, Illinois, invited an acquaintance into his home in the Heart of Chicago area on the city's Lower West Side.
Sometime around 10:50 p.m., inside the 1600 block of West 18th Place, what began as a familiar visit shifted into danger, and the night set into motion events that would end in tragedy for Micheal A. Peterman.
Inside the home, the acquaintance produced a gun and shot Micheal A.
Peterman in the abdomen before fleeing into the neighborhood's darkness.
Responding officers found the 28-year-old Micheal A. Peterman mortally wounded; he was pronounced dead at the scene as detectives began to cordon off the block and search for the man who had just walked out of Micheal's home, after having just taken his life.
Early reports captured the stark simplicity of what happened: an invited guest, a brief visit, and then a single, fatal act that left the Heart of Chicago community stunned.
In the aftermath, police searched for the shooter who had run from the 1600 block, and for a time there was no immediate arrest.
Years later, however, local reporting noted that a suspect had been arrested and was being held at the Cook County Jail, even as 28-year-old Micheal A. Peterman's family waited for a trial to move forward.
