On August 17, 2024, at approximately 9:00 AM, a tragic incident unfolded in East Oakland, California, resulting in the death of 27-year-old Tyrell Bland. The Oakland Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the 1600 block of 83rd Avenue, where they discovered four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, Bland and another victim, identified as 35-year-old Waltrice Dilliehunt, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The two other victims were transported to local hospitals in critical condition.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation among several individuals. During the dispute, an individual brandished a firearm and discharged multiple rounds, striking the victims. The assailant fled the scene in a vehicle immediately after the incident.
In the days following the shooting, the Oakland Police Department intensified their investigation, leading to the arrest of two suspects on August 20, 2024. The individuals were apprehended in connection with the homicides and were taken into custody without incident. The case was subsequently forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney’s office for further action.
The community was deeply affected by the loss of Bland and Dilliehunt, with many expressing their grief and calling for an end to the senseless violence plaguing the area. Memorials and vigils were held in their honor, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to address and reduce gun violence in Oakland.
