On September 9, 2024, 15-year-old Mario Fertini III was tragically found dead from multiple gunshot wounds near Bear Creek and Brookside Drives in Merced, California. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots around 2 a.m., but it wasn't until approximately 6 a.m. that authorities discovered his body. Mario and his mother had relocated to Merced about nine months prior. Family members remember him as a joyful and loving individual who had recently begun his freshman year of high school.
In the course of their investigation, Merced police identified 27-year-old John Flores as a suspect in Mario's murder. Flores, a known gang member under Post Release Community Supervision in Merced County, was apprehended on October 24, 2024, after a search warrant was executed at a residence near Highway 59 and Mission Avenue. He was subsequently booked into the Merced County Jail on homicide charges, with bail set at $1 million.
Authorities believe Flores did not act alone and are actively seeking information to identify a second suspect involved in the homicide. Witnesses have described a white, four-door vehicle with a sunroof that may be connected to the crime. The Merced Police Department has urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in their ongoing investigation.
