On a Monday evening in September 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in a quiet southeast Memphis neighborhood, leaving a family grieving and a community in search of answers. Roderick Lynn Green, a 43-year-old Black male, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the 4200 block of Eastwind Drive. Despite the swift arrival of Memphis Police Department officers around 8:30 p.m., his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The initial shock of the
violent act soon gave way to a determined investigation by law enforcement. Their efforts quickly focused on two individuals, leading them to issue warrants for the arrest of Rerean Gillon and Shanyia Gillon. The relationship between the suspects and Green, and the circumstances that led to the fatal confrontation, were not immediately made public, leaving a veil of mystery over the tragic event.
The search for the accused was short-lived. A coordinated effort between the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Memphis Police Department led to the capture of Rerean Gillon just two days after the shooting. The following day, Shanyia Gillon was also taken into custody. Both were charged with first-degree murder, bringing a sense of resolution to the initial phase of the investigation and marking the beginning of the judicial process to address the untimely death of Roderick Lynn Green.
