On October 7, 2017, 18-year-old Hispanic male Manuel Mendoza was fatally shot in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. At approximately 10:50 a.m., Mendoza was standing near the driver's side door of a vehicle on the 1800 block of South Throop Street when a gunman approached and opened fire. The driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Alexis Ceron-Salgado, also a Hispanic male, was seated inside at the time. Both individuals were struck multiple times; Mendoza sustained four gunshot wounds to his back and armpit, while Ceron-Salgado suffered seven gunshot wounds to his neck and face. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The assailant, identified as 23-year-old Derek Paige, fled the scene on foot, heading west on 18th Place. Paige, an alleged member of the Almighty Ambrose street gang, was later apprehended and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. According to prosecutors, the shooting was a retaliatory act in response to an incident the previous night in the Fuller Park neighborhood, where two men affiliated with the Ambrose gang were shot and seriously wounded. Investigators reported that both Mendoza and Ceron-Salgado were members of the rival La Raza street gang, and the two gangs were engaged in ongoing hostilities at the time.
Evidence linking Paige to the crime included surveillance footage from a police-operated POD camera, which captured the shooting and showed the assailant touching the vehicle's fender. A fingerprint matching Paige's left thumb was recovered from that area. Additionally, a witness in close proximity to the incident identified Paige as the shooter. Following his arrest, Paige was held without bail and was scheduled to return to court on April 17, 2018.
The deaths of Manuel Mendoza and Alexis Ceron-Salgado underscore the persistent issue of gang-related violence in Chicago, particularly among young Hispanic males. Despite efforts by law enforcement to curb such incidents, retaliatory shootings between rival gangs continue to claim lives and disrupt communities.
