In the early morning hours of a Friday in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 22-year-old Rantavious Me'Kal Johnson was tragically cut short. On August 2, 2024, a sequence of violent events unfolded, beginning with a dispute that left Johnson with a gunshot wound and culminating in a devastating vehicle collision that would claim his life and that of a police officer.
The tragic chain of events began with a disagreement near the intersection of South Parkway East and Mississippi Boulevard.
During this altercation, Rantavious Johnson was shot. After being wounded, Johnson got into his Nissan and drove away from the scene of the shooting. It was a short time later, around 3:00 a.m., that his vehicle crashed into a Memphis Police car at the intersection of Danny Thomas Boulevard and Mississippi Boulevard.
The force of the collision was catastrophic, resulting in the deaths of both Rantavious Johnson and one of the officers in the police vehicle, 34-year-old Demetrice Johnson. Another officer in the patrol car was also critically injured in the crash. Emergency services responded to the chaotic scene, but neither Rantavious Johnson nor Officer Johnson could be saved.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Memphis Police Department's Homicide Bureau has been investigating the initial shooting that led to the fatal crash.
