On May 13, 2023, 14-year-old Wort Ellsworth Whipple III was fatally shot on the westbound platform of SEPTA's Market-Frankford Line at the 52nd Street Station in West Philadelphia. The incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m., when an altercation between Whipple and an unidentified male escalated into violence.
