In the early hours of a Wednesday morning in Pittsburgh's Hill District, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet, leading to the tragic deaths of two individuals, one of whom was 16-year-old Cameron Blue-Gray. The male teenager was discovered with a gunshot wound to his chest in the vicinity of Webster Avenue and Somers Street on October 4, 2023. First responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
At the
same scene, authorities also found 33-year-old Robert Lee Freeman Jr., who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the location. The incident prompted a significant police response after a 16-round ShotSpotter alert notified them of the shooting at approximately 3 a.m.
The Pittsburgh Public Schools community mourned the loss of Blue-Gray, who had been a student at Pittsburgh Milliones Prep during the previous school year. In the wake of the violence, a trauma response team from the Neighborhood Resilience Project went door-to-door in the affected community to offer support to residents grappling with the tragedy.
As of the initial reports, law enforcement had not made any arrests in connection with the double homicide. Detectives from the Violent Crime Unit are leading the investigation, exploring the circumstances that led to the shooting and looking into the possibility of a third person's involvement. The question of whether the two victims knew each other or if they shot one another was also part of the ongoing investigation.
